The theraputic benefits of marijuana lie in the naturally occuring chemicals known as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are a class of diverse chemical compounds that activate cannabinoid receptors. These include the endocannabinoids (produced naturally in the body by humans and animals), the phytocannabinoids (produced by various plants), and synthetic cannabinoids (produced chemically by man). The most notable cannabinoid is the phytocannabinoid ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive compound of cannabis.
THC has mild to moderate analgesic effects, and cannabis can be used to treat pain by altering transmitter release on dorsal root ganglion of the spinal cord and in the periaqueductal gray. Other effects include relaxation, altered space-time perception, alteration of visual, auditory, and olfactory senses, fatigue, and appetite stimulation (colloquially known as “the munchies”). It also has antiemetic properties, and also may reduce aggression in certain subjects.
There are two types of marijuana. Indica & Sativa. Hybrids are a mixture of both. Each patient may react differently to the affects of the medication.

Proposition 215 also gives doctors a legal defense against professional or legal sanctions for recommending marijuana use.
